Robert Kunzweiler is the founder of Back Roads Capital Management, a private investment platform focused on direct real estate investment and small-cap operating businesses within the real estate sector.

From 2012 to 2025, Robert served as co-founder and Managing Principal of Stonecutter Capital Management, a New York-based real estate investment firm. Under his leadership, Stonecutter and its affiliates deployed more than $1 billion of equity across multi-family housing, residential development, industrial, retail, hotel and select operating businesses. The firm acquired or developed over 28,000 multi-family units, earning a reputation for institutional rigor paired with entrepreneurial agility.

In 2019, Robert co-founded Stonecutter Ventures to expand into direct investments in operating businesses adjacent to real estate. He remains involved in select legacy matters at both firms.

Earlier in his career, Robert held senior roles at CDC Capital Markets, IXIS, and Natixis, where he specialized in structuring complex real estate transactions and ultimately led Natixis’s Midwest regional office. He began his career at Fitch Ratings in the CMBS group, where he developed a strong foundation in credit and structured finance.

Robert earned a B.A. in Economics from Columbia University. He serves on the board of Newark Academy in Livingston, New Jersey, and is a national member of Business Executives for National Security.

John Kunzweiler is a partner at Back Roads Capital Management where he works alongside his brother Robert across all aspects of the firm’s investment and business development activities. He brings over 25 years of commercial real estate finance experience across multiple market cycles.

From 2022 to 2025, John managed a portfolio of 16 investments at Stonecutter Capital Management, responsible for property-level management, underwriting, and financial reporting.

Prior to Stonecutter, John spent a decade in loan origination across Argentic Investment Management and the Royal Bank of Scotland, where he originated fixed-rate CMBS and floating-rate bridge loans for both securitization and balance-sheet execution. Throughout his origination career, John closed over $1.5 billion in commercial real estate loans on more than 100 properties across diverse markets and asset classes.

Earlier in his career, John developed core expertise in commercial real estate debt underwriting in capital markets roles at Countrywide, Credit Suisse, and Walker & Dunlop.

John holds a B.S.B.A. in Finance from the University of Pittsburgh.
